Used Books
Used Book Policy:

At Books & Crannies, we accept used books under a used book credit system.

When you bring in books for trade, your credit is calculated as follows:

You receive 25% of the
original cover price of paperback books and
books on compact disc.

Hardcover books and books on audio cassette are priced on case-by-case
basis. You usually will receive somewhere in the neighborhood of 15% of the
original cover price.

Your credit is good towards any used item. Used paperbacks and books on
CD are priced at 50% of the cover price, used hardcovers and books on tape
are priced based on condition and popularity; usually about 30% of the
original cover price.

We use a half-cash half-credit system. That means that if you buy $20.00
worth of used books, your credit will cover $10.00 of your purchase. The
remaining $10.00 and the sales tax must be covered by cash, check or credit
card.

Tips:

  • Please do not bring in more than two small bags or boxes of books at a
time. This allows us to total your credit quickly and will result in fewer
books being rejected due to space concerns.
  • Inspect and clean your books, especially if they have been in storage
for a while. Books with pet stains, water damage, cobwebs or any signs
of rodent activity will be rejected.
  • We will not accept series romances, condensed books, book club
    editions or textbooks.
  • Lay your books neatly in the bag or box you are transporting them in.
This will prevent book damage en route.
  • All books are rejected or accepted on a case-by-case basis, we cannot
guarantee that any book will be accepted.

Used Book FAQs:

Why can't I just trade books for books without using cash?
Although we love books and want to encourage reading, we are also a
business. Our landlord, vendors and the state of California do not accept used
books as payment. We need cash to keep the lights on, our employees paid
and our taxes taken care of.

Can I cash out my credit?
Your used book credit is only usable under the terms named above. It is not
redeemable for cash or any other item or service. If you do not wish to use
your credit or are moving, you may turn your credit over to someone who
wants to use it.

Can I ever use my credit for new items?
No. Used book credit is only good towards used items. We pay cash for our
new books, we need to receive cash as payment for them.

Why is your used book price based on the original cover price
instead of the K-Mart/Wal-Mart/Barnes & Noble sticker price?
We try to price our used books as fairly as possible. To make sure that our
book prices remain consistent, we base them on the original price (printed
directly on the book). This works in our customers' favor when they bring
books in. Used book credit is always based on the higher original cover price.

Why do you give so much less for hardcovers and books on tape?
The cassette tape is dying out and there is considerably less demand for them.
CD players are standard in most cars. We welcome books on CD but we
simply do not have the room or the need for large numbers of books on tape.

Hardcovers are not nearly as popular as paperbacks among our customers.
We usually accept recent bestsellers that are not yet available in paperback.
Without this restriction, we would be buried in unsalable merchandise. Please
note that this restriction only applies to fiction. Non-fiction and large print
books are welcome in hardcover under the terms named above.

I have an entire personal library that I would like to turn in. Is
that possible?
There are rare cases when we will accept large numbers of books from a
single customer. However, you
must call ahead to make sure that we are able
to accept the amount of books you are offering. Please do not bring in any
more than two small bags or boxes unless you have talked to us first. We
cannot process large amounts of books without notice and may reject the
books altogether if too many are brought in at once.

I brought in some wonderful books and they were rejected. Why?
As stated above, books are accepted or rejected on a case-by-case basis. The
most common reasons for a book to be rejected are: battered condition,
water damage, an overstock of the title, or an overstock in the genre.

If I drop off my books and you reject some of them, what
happens?
We assume that you do not want your books back if you do not specify.
Rejected books are donated or thrown away, depending on condition. If you
want the rejected titles back, please specify when you drop off your books
and we will honor your request. We ask that you return for your books within
two business days.

I don't want credit but I need cash, is there any way to get cash
for my used books?
We're sorry but we only give used book credit in exchange for books.
