The Story of Books & Crannies

Books & Crannies opened its doors in June of 2002.  Mother and
daughter founders, Chelley Kitzmiller and Gina Christopher saw a
need in Tehachapi for a quality independent bookstore specializing in
new and used titles.

Gina bought out Chelley in 2006 and Books & Crannies has continue
to grow.  Store specialties include an impressive local author rack,
custom blends of coffee and tea, and a knowledgeable staff.

In early 2008, a prime location became available and Books &
Crannies moved in May of 2008. With even more space and a better
location, Tehachapi's bookstore continues to grow.

What makes an independent bookstore independent?

Independent bookstores are owned by individuals, not corporations.
That means that independents are able to stock books based on what the
community wants, not what so-called experts think the community
wants. It means that independents are free to support local authors. It
means that independents give back to the community- through tax
dollars, community activities and charitable contributions.

Independent bookstores create independent minds. In addition to
bestsellers, customers can find the unusual, the obscure, and the
eccentric titles that corporate bookstores can't be bothered to carry.

Independent bookstores connect the reading community in a way that is
impossible for chains and online vendors. Independents employ people
who care passionately about books, not just about sales. They can direct
you to Nora Roberts or Annie Proulx with equal ease. They can keep
their eyes open for a regular customer's favorite authors and
recommend books of a similar style.

Independent bookstores are good for the community. When you shop
for books, make your first stop an independent.
